Me & My Yellow Chair – scottfaber.com bio picture
  • Welcome to my blog!

So I found it... the Chair of My Dreams
So I found it... the chair of my dreams. The shabby chic, hint of french countryside type of chair I had been ripping pictures out of magazines of for months. Ok in my fantasy they had been pink- but these were a perfect pair of yellow chairs. There was no question they would have to be mine- but I did almost choke when he quoted me the price. Have you ever made one of those purchases you knew that your __________________(fill in the blank-husband~lover~checkbook~mother~self~accountant~) was going to kill you for- but was worth the risk of death? Well this was one of those moments. I quickly wrote out the check- trying to hide the amount from my conscience and loaded the chairs into the back of the minivan. (yes I drive a minivan- more on that later). I cried as I drove up the street- still not sure if they were tears of joy, or panic. I almost got in an accident as I kept checking the rearview mirror to be sure they were real, and really as awesome as I thought they were. The moment of reconning was coming- the confession. I knew these chairs would be an asset to our photo studio. But how to pitch this to my husband in a way he could understand (and lets face it- not give me the look of nuclear death- or worse yet make me try to return them). Thus the creation of my new Blog! I have long been a reader of blogs- seeking inspiration that is always out there. And this has pushed me to grab the lifejacket and take the plunge.

Beach Me!

Yes, Yellow Chair meets sand and salt water for a family reunion photo shoot. There were a few obstacles to overcome.   I had to learn how to dig enough sand to level the chair-(after the kids learned they could tip the chair over- the fun was irresistible) but not too much sand to make it also unstable.  Once the magic light time arrived and a slight breeze came up- the only challenge was how to edit it down to a manageable few!  These kids were sun-kissed and happy from a day of play- simple smiles came easy- even for mom and dad.  The Yellow Chair may be a little worse for ware-(note to self- tipping chair and riding it down the sand dune may be fun but does not extend the life of the chair)  but nothing a little wood glue won’t fix.

Wonderland

The Yellow Chair has its 15 minutes of FAME!  The NACE (national association of catering executives) had their annual fundraiser to benefit the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.  The theme this year was An Alice Affair- using the recently released Alice in Wonderland update as a creative inspiration.  Carl Johnson of Durham Magazine and Jami Caskey of WRAL FM were amazing in their portrayal of Mad Hatter and Alice.  And as designer of the center stage they graced- of course I had to incorporate the Yellow Chair.  It fit to perfection with the Mad Hatters table.  As the night progressed, our actors warmed to their parts.  I did think I was going to fall over when I witnessed the Mad Hatter (Carl Johnson) jump up on the tea table and march across – only to step down onto the Yellow Chair to give his next address.  Carl and the Yellow Chair survived- and now I know how to get chocolate icing off yellow fabric!

Chapel Hill gets a Visit

We had a beautiful night in Chapel Hill  for a Yellow Chair / Family portrait.  One picture is a little peak at Michelle doing what she does best!  Getting everyone to smile!  Then there is even a self-portrait that turned out kind of cool, so I included it.  It was somewhat accidental; I take test shots to test my lighting and exposure.  Usually all are dumped… but this one I liked and kept.  I kept some of these “behind the scenes” images because I thought they added some nice flavor to the photoshoot. ~ Scott

Awesome pictures!!!!

Boys will be Boys!

Growing up with sisters- I find I am constantly amazed at the world of boys.  Watching my son play with his friends I have to hold myself back from intervening in their rough play – and ruining their fun.  Photo shoots with boys bring all the energy of a barrel of monkeys- and as many laughs.  Even the most well behaved boys produce more “out-takes” than any girl shoots ever.  And Scott and I enjoy it immensely.  WE never have to say- “look excited “or “show some energy”.    These beautiful boys were no exception- very well behaved- but also tons of fun as their personalities shown through.  Technically these shots would not have produced “A”s at photo school- but each one of them was a keeper in my book- and each of them went home with mom in her proof book including the more classically posed shots.  Yellow Chair- you survived all the energy these boys brought to the shoot and more!

Adorable. I think you should take the yellow chair to school! ;-) I could see Mrs Pothoven in it with all of the kids around her. Maybe story time with the yellow chair? Love the blog!

The Pitter Patter of Tiny Little Feet

8 little feet to be exact.  To go where the yellow chair had not gone before … I must admit a little inspiration from one of my heros who recently started her own line of pet supplies.  And loving the four legged ones in my life, I couldn’t wait to meet the loves in some of my friends lives.

So on a busy friday afternoon we invited Teck and Lillie to spend some time in the Yellow Chair.  What sweet little souls.  It was cute to see them trying so hard to understand what we wanted, and after a few wrong turns they got it!  And with some trial and error on the part of the adults to get their attention – most of which only inspired them to come running to us- we got the hang of it too.

Their personalities came out… and we all shared some priceless moments.

Matching their outfits with the backdrops came easy- the vinyl wall with the black leather collar- the red wall and chandelier with the posh outfits- and the bold white with their house divided basketball outfits.

I think my favorite though was the pups playing around the legs of the Yellow Chair and moms favorite shoes.

I have a whole new respect for the photographers who work with animals full time.  And we are eager to expand our pet photography- so give us a call and we can get to know your four legged family members too!
